Motivational Story - Joe Burrow (Cincinnati Bengals / NFL)
Greetings! This is not going to be a glamour story about the newly-named College Football Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow. Rather, I am focusing for you about the GRIND it took for him to get where he is today… the No. 1 Draft selection by the NFL in 2020.
Let’s go back in time. For the three years prior to Joe’s arrival at LSU, he pretty much sat on the bench at Ohio State. Burrow admits now that he was underprepared for quarterback play at a major college football program coming out of high school. “I wasn’t ready to play at all, and everybody knew it,” he says. “It was hard to realize that you’re not as good as you thought you were?"
Today, Burrow will tell you that those early years at Ohio State were “years of quiet development.” Initially he was told by his coaches that for him to be able to get on the field, he needed to re-work his entire throwing mechanics. Two areas of concern were quickness on releasing the ball and the velocity.
Every day after practice back then, Burrow went through a daily set of drills to help refine his throwing motion. He would set up teammates and managers to help him work on quick throw drills, to help his release. Burrow was serious about his development even going as far to film the workouts on his phone. He would ask his coaches to critique him. He wanted to find the answers. What were his problems? He wanted to know the why and how’s and to fix them!
And that he did after transferring schools to LSU. During the 2019 season, Burrow went on to shatter single-season school records for the Tigers in passing touchdowns (41) and yards (4,014). In the process, he has set himself up for the Big Payday!
Joe’s story is no different than Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees. They all sat for a period of time in the NFL at the start of their careers. In between, they learned the game and perfected their craft. When the call came, they each took over the reins and never gave it back!
