Motivational Story -- Power To Believe (How I Met My Wife!)
Greetings! For this piece, I want to share a very personal story that has a special motivational message. This how I proposed to my wife!
When I was 26-years old, then in my second year working in the National Hockey League for the Washington Capitals, a young lady (Wendy) from Minneapolis, Minnesota, wrote a letter to our PR Department in August of 1981 addressed to no one in particular. She was seeking advice on how to get into sports journalism. I answered her letter and offered up feedback. That is how we were first introduced.
She was 21, a senior in college. I was 26. Within a month after the first letter, we enjoyed one lengthy long distance (by pay phone) call followed by six months of everyday letter writing telling each other about ourselves and dreams until we would finally meet in person.
Within a few weeks of our first meeting date on Feb. 13, 1982, we would go outside on the same night at the same time to make a Wish to the Stars and mailed it to each other. We agreed to open them up when we first met in person.
As we neared our meeting date, I called Wendy’s Mom in Minnesota to get her ring size (which stunned her since I had never met her daughter nor family). I went out and purchased her engagement ring.
THIS IS THE PART OF “BELIEVING IN ONE’S SELF” THAT I HAVE TRIED TO TEACH YOU THROUGH MY WEEKLY MESSAGES! THE "POWER TO BELIEVE" TRIGGERS EVERYTHING IN YOUR BEING! THE WAY YOU THINK. THE WAY YOU PERFORM. IT INFLUENCES YOUR LIFE!
I knew every little detail about this girl over those past seven months that I didn’t need to go through a series of dates to confirm my feelings.
After taking Wendy on a tour of the Nation's Capital in DC upon arrival, we were totally exhausted from the anxiousness of our first meeting. Getting to my home in the early evening hours and before we took a nap together on the couch in the living room, I set an alarm clock to wake the two of us at 12 Midnight (which officially became Valentine's Day, 1982).
I got down on my knee. Pulled out each of our Wishes that were secretly placed under the couch. I asked Wendy to open up mine first. It simply read: WILL YOU MARRY ME! It was my official marriage proposal. Before Wendy responded, she then asked me to open hers. It also read the same exact four words: WILL YOU MARRY ME!
In many people’s eyes, I took the biggest risk of my life. I chose to marry someone and went against all odds and many doubts from friends, family and co-workers. Yet my belief and commitment never wavered for a minute! Like an athlete, being a team (as Wendy and I are) takes work. It’s give and take. It’s supporting one another. Being loyal to and trusting of each other! Just like the ingredients you need to be a great teammate!
In 2020, we celebrated our 38th wedding anniversary! TRUST YOUR HEART AND IN FATE & DESTINY OK!
