Motivational Story - Chadwick Boseman (Actor)

Greetings! This week I am highlighting film actor Chadwick Boseman, who was the definition of Toughness "which is the state of being strong enough to withstand adverse conditions and the ability to deal with hardship or to cope in difficult situations."

Boseman once played the fearless king of the fictional African country of Wakanda in the award-winning film “Black Panther”. In real life, he most certainly exhibited those same traits where in the last four years alone, he was privately and quietly battling through Stage 3 Colon Cancer. It was a disease that would sadly take his life at the age of 43 on August 28th (2020).

Despite undergoing multiple surgeries and numerous chemotherapy sessions in those past few years, this rising Cinematic Star found the time, the strength and perseverance to act in two mega-blockbuster Avengers movies. He then took on the headline role in the 2018 “Black Panther” film followed by a starring role in the 2019 crime thriller “21 Bridges” and then another key role in Spike Lee’s Vietnam-vet epic “Da 5 Bloods” … all the while he had cancer ravaging throughout his body!

Said his friend Oprah Winfrey: "The courage, the strength, the Power it had to take to do all that in between surgeries and chemo. This is what Dignity looks like."

His role in “Black Panther” will go down in history as perhaps the movie that changed the way Hollywood treated films with predominantly Color and it was Boseman as the leader.

It took until his mid-30’s before he received his first big movie break? That came in 2013 when he was cast as baseball legend Jackie Robinson in the biopic film “42”. He was a virtual unknown at the time but took on the part with such confidence and grace. That role led him to taking on two more biopics of importance where he played James Brown in “Get On Up” in 2014 and Thurgood Marshall in “Marshall” in 2017.

Boseman’s legacy will be of the incredible body of work he created in just seven years and that he certainly did his part to help move the needle and change the movie industry for the better!

In closing, I want you to remember these all-important words once spoken by Boseman. This came from a commencement speech he gave to the graduating class at Howard University, his alma-mater, back in 2018.

He was encouraging the future generation of leaders to find your purpose in life. He said: “Purpose is the essential element of You. It is the reason You are on the planet at this particular time in history. Your very existence is wrapped up in the things you are here to fulfill. Whatever you choose for a career path, remember the struggles along the way are only meant to shape You for your Purpose.”
