Motivational Story - Deadliest Catch - Life of a Crab Fisherman
Greetings! There are weeks where I will slide off the subject of sports and delve into a different subject matter to serve as a source of inspiration. This piece is to give you a feeling of what life is like to be on a Team of Crab Fisherman that you might have seen from Discovery Channel’s popular TV show “Deadliest Catch” over the years?
It’s about real people toughing it out in the world’s toughest sea, under the toughest circumstances imaginable. Many a fisherman have said that “Columbus would not have discovered America if the Atlantic were the Bering Sea!”
They go to work every day in sub-zero working conditions with life threatening waves that reach the levels of a four-story house and with hurricane-force winds that, at times, toss their ships around like toys. These crewmates face potential fatality every second they step foot on deck, some dodging a 900-pound crab pot that will decapitate a human in a matter of seconds or some getting accidentally caught in a cable that holds the pots and can pull them into the near frozen sea.
But no one seems to complain. They tape up their wounds and get back to work. Sometimes, they score big. Sometimes they come up empty. Some of the fishermen have said their blood pressure spikes upwards to around 170/120 during trips. When boats head out to sea, every person’s life is in the hands of their captain. At any time, a crew member could die or one mistake could kill an entire team and destroy families that await back home. The players on these boats must work together as a “team” 24/7 in order to make it back to port.
The Bering Sea will humble the hardest soul and challenge the most experienced crewman. It’s a physical and mental test every single day. If there’s a lesson to be learned from this story is that you have to meet every challenge with strength. Have a game plan in your mind, work it and have no excuses. The late Captain Phil Harris of the Cornelia Marie, echoed that by always preaching to his crew: “You either want it or you don’t and if you do, go after it. The only person stopping You is You.”
