Motivational Story - Making a Life Decision
Greetings! This week I wanted to touch on a subject that does not pay you a cent. It is the type of benefit every athlete seeks to find and cherish …. It’s that feeling of being appreciated and respected by your sports team organization and coaches. I’ve witnessed quite a few athletes make a business decision to leave a franchise for the highest contract offer and watch their performance drop down considerably because the individual just never felt settled in their new environment?
I’ll never forget the advice the great Peyton Manning received from his former Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy when Peyton became a free agent after the 2011 season and was taking offers from many of the NFL teams. Dungy said: “I told Peyton that when you’re making an important life decision, make sure it’s without regard to money, title or position. Make sure it’s about who you’re going to be working with and how much you’ll enjoy being there?”
In the last month, word started to come out that Sammy Watkins, a wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs, was facing a similar decision. Here was a former 2014 First Round draft pick in the NFL. A player that has already suited up for three different teams in his first six seasons. He’s seen the good and bad how one organization from another can differ? How coaches from one club to another can be so vastly different in structure and with their teaching aspects of the game? How a locker room that Gels can truly make you feel like you belong or one appearing chaotic that makes you feel unsettled?
Watkins future once again was up for debate. This time by the Chiefs franchise going into this 2020 season. With many free agents to sign or lose, Watkins decided to stay and actually for less money than gamble on potential free agency. His decision came right after his outstanding play during last season’s AFC Championship and the Super Bowl where he caught 12 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns in the two games.
Watkins on record said: “I love the Chiefs organization and the type of team and coaches we have, so why wouldn't I stay? I think the fun is in the winning more than anything. I’ve really learned that it's not always about money. I found a happy place in Kansas City so why not take a smaller contract and come out and play with the guys you love playing with?''
Always Remember: It is very important to enjoy your surroundings where your Mindset feels at home. When you’re in a good place, cherish the opportunity before you! All the best!
