Motivational Story - Max Weinberg (Drummer for Bruce Springsteen Band)

Greetings! This piece, I wanted to illustrate for you another profession that takes perhaps even more dedication, discipline and passion to perform than the sport you currently have chosen? I am introducing to you Max Weinberg, the 69-year-old Drummer for Bruce Springsteen’s E-Street Band. During his 43-year career with the group, he has played in over 2,500 concerts across the entire planet.

The Springsteen concerts are legendary for their length (averages nearly four hours per show) and they take no breaks or intermissions. During this time period, Weinberg has had major heart surgery (2010), dealt with prostrate cancer, went through seven hand operations. He’s survived two failed back surgeries. Had his shoulder rebuilt.

All of these setbacks and this does not factor in the rigorous travel demands from playing in so many countries over the years and time changes that plays havoc on your body. You find out that you have to be ready to play or the show will go on without you!

Weinberg realized early on that you just can’t show up and think you’re going to play at peak level? Same for you as an athlete? You have to come ready to perform. Your Mindset and every aspect of your body has to be Game Ready! Says Weinberg: “Staying in shape is very important. I work out 3-4 times a week with a trainer doing mostly aerobic exercises and swimming in the pool to keep my endurance up. Spending long periods of time behind a drum set, compresses your spine. Pilates is another workout I enjoy. It helps strengthen and stretch my core muscles—abs, lats, traps—that take the strain off the back.”

“The keys are eating right, living clean and staying relaxed within your Mind,” he added. "It’s like playing golf or any sport. Once you’ve got the mind relaxed, it doesn’t seem to take a lot of muscular effort to perform well in your job.”

When asked about how one survived through four decades of exhausting work as a member of perhaps the most successful “live” rock band in music history? Weinberg says: ”You had to learn how to dig down deep within yourself and discover the goods. You had to learn how to pull out the discipline and pull out the drive.”

Once again, as you see, in order to achieve success in your chosen sport, it will take much more than skill set dependency to achieve your Dreams. It’s what you do behind the curtains when no one is watching that will prove to be the difference. Now is the time to punch in the clock and get after it.

In closing, I am going to share one of the great locker room messages the legendary Green Bay Packers NFL Coach Vince Lombardi used with his players. It read:

✓ WIN the Practice!

✓ WIN the Workout!

✓ WIN the Drill!

✓ WIN the Sprint!

✓ WIN the Meeting!

✓ WIN the Moment!

✓ WIN THE DAY!
