Motivational Story - Selling Yourself

Greetings! My piece this week has a touch of “Salesmanship” that we all face in our everyday life … you and I are so much alike even though thousands of people can watch you perform in a sports event whereas only one person typically will see me when I host a sales meeting?

No matter the number of eyeballs watching, we both have to bring the total package to work everyday. Why I hit on this topic, is that the power of social media now has the ability to move the needle and sway sports teams and or school programs on how they choose whom they want to invest in?

Not to relate my job totally to an athlete but if my voice and mannerisms on the phone do not uplift the possible business partner I am trying to sell within seconds or if my appearance and ability to converse in person doesn’t connect with the individual sitting across the desk, I will have a hard time getting the client to invest in the sports team that I am out representing.

Teams in today’s world have so much more access to video and can make a determination about a prospect so much easier by how you present yourself through social media settings. There’s still so many little things that team’s will want to dig up to get a truer picture of your ability to pay back on their investment one day?

For example, just last week an NFL team contacted several college football programs to get more background info on players they have interest in and were seeking answers to these basic questions of the coaches … Does this player attend classes on time? How is his attitude at practices and team meetings? Does he show up on time? How would you rank his work-out efforts in the off-season?

You also have to be aware that clubs at the pro level now have a very experienced team of security officials on staff and they are going to check up on your background going back to high school and maybe beyond? They’ll look to see if this player gets into trouble? If so, how much. At what degree, etc. One offense could jeopardize your standing with a club?

I’ve said this to many players in year’s past. One of the biggest tie-breakers you can have over another prospect is your involvement in local community activities? It is something scouts will detect from your social media pages and that every coach will brag about for their player when they get called on by the Big League teams. Always remember, you are SELLING YOU every single day OK!

My Best Always! Jim

TWO GREAT MESSAGES TO REMEMBER:

>> "Talent sets the floor; Character sets the ceiling" – stated by Bill Belichick, Head Coach for the NFL New England Patriots

>> “Character is much easier kept than recovered” - stated by Thomas Paine, an Author whose writings had important influences on the American Revolution and helped pave the way for the Declaration of Independence in 1776
