Motivational Story - Teamwork & Trust
As the world environment continues to cause havoc on sports team schedules and in many cases, the ability for players to properly train and prepare for their new season ahead. I wanted to bring another perspective from someone who’s been in high-pressure moments, dangerous situations and has faced harsh challenges where your Mind has to stay focused on the matter at hand even if it is caused by a Pandemic?
Meet Jamie Clarke, a Canadian mountain climber and world adventurer. Over a 15-year period ending in 2008, he had climbed Seven Summits – representing the tallest mountains on seven different continents around the world. He also took on a 40-day, 600-plus mile (1,000-kilometre) journey by camel through some Middle Eastern deserts. Also on his resume is the fact that he’s attempted to climb Mount Everest and its 29,000-foot summit, four different times - twice reaching the highest point on the planet and twice he’s failed.
In mountain climbing, the two most essential things Clarke found that you must rely on in order to come back down safely are “Teamwork” and “Trust” and there are a lot of other similarities he would compare to that of an athlete playing in a competitive sport. For example, he’ll go through months of preparation in advance of the climb. Their expedition will consist of a team of about 12 people on average, all to come together and buy into the plan? His teammates must all be in top physical, emotional, and psychological condition where each climb can take around two months to complete.
Their world is built on the fact that everyone knows they might not be the one who makes it to the summit, but they’re trying to get the expedition to the top! That everyone has a role to play in reaching team success!
What does he see as the determining factor of whether one succeeds or succumbs? “It’s the Mind game,” Clarke states. “The Mental fortitude. The management of your state of Mind versus the external factors that make the difference in trying times like in today’s world?"
“You need your coaches, parents, everyone … because we depend on each other as a team,” he continues. “But it ultimately comes down to you. You’re grateful for the pats on the back, you’re grateful for encouragement. You’re grateful for your coaching staff. But you have to know there’s no shortcut, there’s no book to read, there’s no affirmation you put on a sticky note on your mirror that tells you that you’re battle tested? You have to go through it.”
“It’s the Mental Game that wins Gold Medals!" he concludes. "Be urgent with your tactics and patient with the outcome.”
