Motivational Story - Coaching the Mindset
All successful athletes carry with them these two attributes: They can think through critical situations and do so in a calm state of mind. This holds true no matter the sport. Much of the difference is in a person’s mental strength.
Speaking on that subject, this week while studying the life of the Formula One race car drivers – mostly because of a current friendship that I enjoy with a young up & coming driver in Great Britain, I found how many mental and physical demands are placed on the drivers. Perhaps even greater than those experienced by athletes here in our team sports where every lap needs maximum concentration and a focus that cannot even slip below 100%?
What fascinated me most for this piece was in finding out the story behind this one driver (Nico Rosberg of Germany) who would become the only person in the last seven years to defeat the brilliant Lewis Hamilton for the World Championship among F1 Drivers. This took place in 2016. The story he tells is what is now becoming part of the training arsenal needed for athletes in pursuit of a Professional Career – Coaching the Mindset.
When discussing the challenge of overcoming Hamilton, Rosberg told the Reuters International News organization that it was a huge process. “I just dedicated my whole every single breathing second of my life to winning that next race. Lewis drove me to go searching for ways to be better than I ever thought I could be because he’s one of the best of all time.”
He added: “So of course to beat him you needed to rise above everything you have. We all train our bodies flat-out every day, yet we don’t do that much for our minds? So I really ramped it up in 2016 and found a way of working intensely with a mental trainer. My focus was on meditation. This word is often misinterpreted but in my case it was about concentration practice and learning to control your mind.”
Rosberg worked on it for 20 minutes every morning and evening throughout the year. “It was beneficial both for racing and my life as a whole,” he stated. “It gave me that bit extra in little percentages to perform even better – and it’s part of why I know I became a world champion!”
To sum up this story for you, never forget that “If there is ever doubt in your Mind - how can your muscles know what they are expected to do”- stated by the late Harvey Penick, one of the great instructors of the mental game for athletes and head golf coach at the University of Texas where he led the program to 21 SEC Championships during his career

“Everything you are, and everything you have, started as a thought in your Mind. Your body is merely there to manifest physically that which the Mind tells it to do. Everything starts with you telling the Mind what you desire" – stated by Thomas D. Willhite, founder of the 'Personal Success Institute (PSI) Seminars' focusing on Self Improvement
“The good Lord gave you a body that can stand most anything. It's your Mind you have to convince” – stated by legendary NFL Hall of Fame coach Vince Lombardi
